Maglia Rosa Attacks on the Passo Pordoi

The early years of the 1990’s were dominated by three Italian, Gianni Bugno, Claudio Chiappucci and Franco Chioccioli. Defending 1990 Giro d’Italia champion Gianni Bugno excelled in the time trials but could not match Chiappucci and Chioccioli in the mountains.

Stage 17 featured the very difficult climb of the Passo Pordoi. Race leader Franco Chioccioli left on doubt of his superiority and attacked the lead group of contenders of the finishing climb of the Pordoi. Second placed Claudio Chiappucci could not hold the Maglia Rosa’s wheel. Chioccioli put his Giro lead out of reach.

Franco Chioccioli crossed the finish line in Milan to complete a very dominating performance.

SPECIAL NOTE: For his dominance and winning with an attacking style Chioccioli was given the nickname “Little Coppi”.
